Interesting article here on sponsorship of smaller sports delivering better value through more target audiences and grass roots connection with the consumers of the sport compared with large sports.

The sponsorships they talk about still focus on sales and branding opportunities and Im not convinced the best products orienteering has to offer are promotional ones - like with running for me, the money corporates can use comes from HR and professional development budgets to engage me as a coach rather than marketing budgets to use me as an advertising channel. Obviously sticking a logo on my back is not going to move product off the shelves! Still its good that the marketing value of smaller sports will start to be discussed more by marketers as their budgets are tightened, so even without TV coverage on our side, still money out their for small but perfectly formed sponsorship concepts.
