Hi there, we're thinking about a laptop for our club. Usual requirements - OCAD, reasonably robust, light, long battery life, pretty colour, etc. Anyone got advice on what to look for, &/or avoid? Cheers

So are we. I don't think the requirements for OCAD are anything special, someone once quipped it could run on a Casio watch. But we're stuck with the notion that it should also be suitable to run the SI system at events. And our techies say they want 4 USB ports to drive all the different things they want to drive. And the $1000 computers don't have enough. Is this a real issue?

USB ports shouldn't be an issue. Just get something like the following and you should be able to connect everything you need. http://search.dse.com.au/electronics/4%20Port%20Usb%20Hub

Get a USB hub to turn one USB port into 4 - it will cater for the SI gear easily.
Check your splits printer is compatible (whether is needs serial, parallel or usb ports)
Battery life hasn't been an issue for us as there's always been either a generator or battery pack available.
An off-the-shelf laptop should be suitable.

I agree with Martin - don't get anything too flash, it would be a waste of money/time.
You might want to try a laptop with a solid state hard drive to help with battery life - but these will be quite a bit more expensive.
