MTBO World Masters

The World Masters MTBO Champs kicked off yesterday in France, in conjunction with the European Champs and a World Cup. There's a good representation from NZ and Australia. The website is www.mtbo2017.fr. Along with the usual welcomes from local dignitaries comes this gem:

The hunter training center of Loiret, with more than 150 hectares, is at your disposal as a playground for
your competitors. Thanks to the variety of typical regional landscapes, this area has a rich fauna. The wild
boars regularly met on this area left some evidence of their presence, which the state of the pathway testify,
and which will not help the participant.

And a gold for NZ! No-one should be surprised that Marquita Gelderman now W50 has won the sprint. In events in Czech and Austria in recent weeks she has been riding the elite courses.

But its the margin that was amazing. 7 minutes!! Even allowing for MTBO win times being a bit longer than foot at 20-25min. Other medallists from our part of the world were Australians Kathy Liley 1st W70, Carolyn Jackson 2nd W60 and Leigh Privett 2nd M70. Nick Collins was next best kiwi with 4th M65, look also for Greg Barbour M55, Deb Bain and Sally Dickson W55, Jim Sutherland M60 and Rob Garden M65. Chip in with any others I've missed.

Another huge win for Marquita - 9 minutes this time! Rob Garden 3rd in M65. Sally Dickson and Deb Bain 4-5 in W55. Others still in progress.

Rob Garden is sitting in 1st place in M65, and has just withstood a challenge by a Czech who had an early lead but finished 30sec after. However there are lots more to finish yet. Marquita is in the lead by 4min at the 1st intermediate control but again its early days yet.

Looks like Rob will hold M65! Marquita is the only finisher so far in W50 but at the arena pass-thru (60%) she had a 10min lead. Golden couple!

Next best kiwi Deb Bain 5th in W55. Notable Aussies Carolyn Jackson and Kathy Liley 2nds W60 and 70 resp, Leigh Privett 3rd M70. BTW this was the Long, 1 Aug was Middle. Elites are riding a Euro Champ now, and there's live tracking. There's a sprint relay tomorrow.

NZ has 3 mixed 2-person teams in a sprint relay today - all in category MX100 in which ages have to exceed 100. There are 4 legs, ridden W-M-W-M. After the first leg Marquita (with Greg Barbour) has a 5min lead, but Deb (with Rob) and Sally (with Nick) haven't come thru yet. Could be tricky as even the gold-medal W60 who did a faster k-rate than Marquita yesterday, was well down.

Gulp. Deb has mis-punched, and Sally is well back in 17th out of 22. Meanwhile Greg has finished leg 2 extending the lead to 8min (over a GB team)

I don't think you can trust the live results (done by TracTrac) as there are all sorts of anomalies, but it looks to me like Marquita has finished leg 3 with the lead now out to 12min, except that the GB woman is shown as mp. Nick has handed back to Sally in 17th.

And Greg has finished. Except that TracTrac shows him as 2nd, after a non-comp rider with a time of 0.00!!! Hopefully its clearer to those trackside. Well done NZ1!! Not well done TracTrac.

And Nick is chasing down two Australians for 10th place. I think. At any rate the lowest he can be is 13th, because of all the mp's. Well he needs to avoid an mp too. Will be interesting to see this tricky map...

Somehow Nick came 14th:-(( Somehow a team must have been un-mp'd. Heard that Sally was first on the scene of a crash, that explains a lot. There may have been other riders who stopped to help too, and were mp'd as a result. The damaged rider was out cold for 4min
