I have a course in condes that has 12 variations. I want to set up OE2010 so that a single class points to all of these variations to avoid having to assign every single competitor to one of the variations. Any valid variation would be accepted for that class. Is this possible?

Open the Assign Classes box and there is a tick box for Ind courses. Tick this for the classes/courses that you have loops in only. For other classes leave it blank.

I think that this still means that I have to assign individual course variations to every competitor - don't really want to do this.
I have played with the mixed setting in the course design and it looks like this will do the job for a low-key fun event.

O-Lynx checks what variation they actually ran and will check the controls off against that course. See http://o-lynx.com/wp-content/uploads/pdf/Setting%20up%20the%20HBOC%20Summer%20Series.docx

You could try "Read chips - Registration" and see if that does what you need
