Orienteers remember former Mohaka councillor

Article by

Members and guests of the Hawke’s Bay Orienteering Club will remember former Hastings District Councillor Deborah Turner by participating in one of her favourite activities when they hold the Deborah Turner Memorial Rogaine event on May 10.

Rogaine is a form of orienteering in which teams must plan a route to visit as many ‘control’ sites as possible over a set period of time, before making it back to the finish line on time.

The event will take place on an area of farmland and forest bounded by the Tukituki River, Craggy Range Road and entering some of the pine forests located behind Te Awanga.

Club president Chris Howell said Deborah, who passed away last year, was an enthusiastic rogainer and it was fitting that the annual event would now carry her name.

“It is also appropriate that the event should double as the Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools’ Rogaining Championships, given Deborah’s deep involvement with the district’s youth in her work as a Hastings District councillor.”

The event is open to anyone who wishes to enter, with an entry fee of $6 per person. Teams should consist of two to five members.

Participants must bring a rainproof jacket, suitable clothing and a minimum of one whistle and one compass per group.

Anybody interested should contact Rob McDonald (876 0146 or rfmcd@ihug.co.nz) by Wednesday 6 May
